Early in 1993 the first auditions were held and our very first performance as the Kwa- Zulu Natal Prestige Band took place at the Royal Agricultural show in Pietermaritzburg. As can be imagined it was no mean feat to mould 70 students from widely diverse school backgrounds into one composite unit. Music which was both well known and difficult had to be learnt in a very short time. The auditioning process was obviously successful because the youngsters chosen for the band were more than equal to the task. The Durban city council had for a number of years presented a military tattoo much on the same lines as that of the Edinburgh military tattoo. It was thus with much pride yet trepidation that we accepted an invitation to perform at the Durban tattoo in July 1993. A show of this sort requires complex music, drill movements as well as at least one major musical showpiece. For this occasion we chose to play ALiberty Fanfare@ which is not only quite a long piece but is extremely complex as well. In the event, our first major public series of performances proved to be a great success.
