Once back in South Africa we continued to perform at a large variety of venues. It wasn=t long before we once again began to cast our eyes overseas in search of new venues where we could perform. The opportunity to perform as a guest band at the Singapore brass band competition was seized upon with alacrity. Although of slightly shorter duration, our trip to Singapore also had numerous high points. We hired chalets at Pasir Ris and visited Cedar Girls High School at their (then) brand new campus. The absolutely efficient underground railway system provided a means of transport throughout our stay in that country. The humidity in Singapore can be really high and this affected our instruments enormously. Much tuning had to take place prior to our performances. Singapore is an amazingly safe place to visit and has a rich cultural diversity which proved to be enormously interesting. For most of the band members, Sentosa Island with its multiple theme parks and amazing musical fountain proved to be the highlight. |
